So interesting! About the beetles...

I don't have any magnolia's - in fact, sadly they don't seem to be popular in my area! But I did also hear my first chiffchaff the other day ๐Ÿ’šand I grew some cuckooflower from seed last year and planted it out in my wildlife garden. I hope that it flowers..

The first time I saw a cuckoo flower it was at the exact same time I heard the cuckoo calling in the distance. I love these magical moments!!

They are AMAZING right now! The colours are fabulous, and this season has given them the perfect conditions. No frost, the winds stopped before they flowered, and theyโ€™ve been warm. All these have come together to create the most magnificent magnolia show

Ahhh that makes sense! Always a joy to see them, but you're right, they do seem to be flourishing!

Great post! The idea of a species of tree pre-dating bees blows my mind ๐Ÿคฏ

It's wild isn't it! I think just the idea of a beetle pollinating anything will come as a shock to some.

Ahh same! I am loving the show they're putting on right now. We have a magnolia tree in our garden but it's a late flowering one (no idea what type), so it's a treat later in the year. I didn't know that the petals are edible!

Oooh lucky you! Check if it's on the list of definitely edible species and have a nibble if it is!

Magnolias are beautiful, the big showy flowers and the white smaller star ones. Love them all

Thank you for this Zabby! That magnolia predate bees and winged insects is so fascinating ๐Ÿง I resd a piece about magnolias this past week where I learned that magnolias grown from seeds take 30 years to flower, which is such an incredible time scale โœจ
