The very day I read this article (or rather because of it!) I noticed and recognised a bee fly for the first time in my life. A coincidence but also a lovely example of how an article can open your eyes. Your title and sub-title caught my attention and they capture the little beastie perfectly. Thank you!
I love bee flies. Find it crazy that a few years ago I didn’t know what they were and now I see dozens just in the garden (which I hope means a healthy population of solitary bees too). Nature is amazing. In my garden they seem to particularly like forget me nots and primroses & we have plenty of both.
Excellent article. I've seen two Dark edged Beeflies this year so far! During lockdown we walked through a local park as part of our daily exercise and over the weeks we watched a colony of Chocolate Mining Bees, which were then parasitised by Nomad Cuckoo Bees and then the Dark Edged Beefly moved in and started laying her eggs in the colony too!
Love this! I saw one the other day and only knew what it was because a friend had sent me a video of one in her garden. Hilariously she'd sent it because it was cute and thought it would help my recuperation from an op, only to Google it and discover what it got up to!! She thought she'd send the video anyway 🤣❤️
Hahah no way, that's brilliant. I bet it helped anyway. Kudos to her for managing to capture one in a video. I have tried and failed! Hope you're on the mend Clare! X
And then I saw two in the garden yesterday!! So lovely to know what they are and what they do, thank you. All going well with me thanks lovey. Hope life is treating you well 😊xxx

Oh this makes me SO happy Jessica, thank you for sharing!
I've experienced the same with Zabby's posts. Brill!

Yes I think they're mostly after the forget-me-nots in mine too!
They're back here... eye-balling Steve in particular...!!!
Absolutely fascinating life history. It seems to be a good spring for them.
