Today I consoled myself with digging up tatties, thankful to find a good bunch of tasty, buttery beauties, after finding yet another attack had been made on my greenhouse. This year has been terrible here in Dumfries and Galloway for my cucumbers, pak choi, and all those fragile green leafy things which must be irresistible to slugs and snails, although many other more substantial things have been chomped too. Personally I am looking forward to the odd courgette (congratulations Zabby on your impressive harvest) but I feel I'm slacking tonight by not being out there now at 10 pm on slug-duty - a couple of nights ago we counted 125 of the slimy devils within 10 feet of the greenhouse. Eeeek.
Sooooo much chomping! I gave up on slug duty... just let em have it in the end. 125 is quite something! Hope your courgettes are ready soon. I just put about 7 courgettes outside with a sign saying FREE and they went in SECONDS. Still tons to harvest at the allotment and about 5 in the fridge.
nice work on the tomatoes Zabby, they look gorgeous! I have had the worst allotment year this year (rain, allotment nemesis, and seedlings that never really got going) and am already looking forward to next year when I can start over again. What I'm really, really looking forward to though is porcini season. I don't think it will be a great year for them (they seem to like a long hot summer followed by some decent rain at the end of summer/beginning of autumn) but I feel like every year I get a bit better at literally and figuratively sniffing them out and the joy I get from following a hunch and finding a Penny bun at the end of it is unrivalled.
Corr let me know how you get on with your porcinis! Ive only ever successfully found them once and I was on a foraging walk with a much more experienced forager!
Awake at 1:30 AM to read your post, wondering how I can incorporate “ko” days into my writing and realize even on over 100 F hot days I have bean seeds that can be germinated to grow sprouts to add to a salad. The nights promise to get cooler after 5 days of heat. Perhaps this is my “ko” time lapses.
Our tomatoes are just starting to come and it is most exciting!
Ooooh exciting. It's the grow-your-own highlight of the year for me!
Lovely stuff! Tomatoes look great!
Thank you! Having the first ripe ones for dinner tonight!

Hope you found your ko Richard and that some cooler nights come for you!
