Make a Spring Equinox Zine
And celebrate the arrival of spring
Tomorrow, 20th March, it’s Spring Equinox, also known as Ostara. This marks the start of astronomical spring, when the Sun crosses the equator’s path and becomes positioned exactly above the equator, between the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. Day and night are almost equal at Spring Equinox, after which the days get longer, until the Autumn Equinox, in September1.
As you know, I’m a big advocate for nature journaling as a simple way to deepen your connection with nature (and just as a fun thing to do that also happens to be good for your general wellbeing). In previous years I have encouraged you to create a Spring Equinox spread in your nature journals, and shared a printable Ostara zine. This year I’m encouraging you to make your own zine to celebrate the arrival of spring.
To make a zine, all you need is one sheet of paper. Here’s a quick tutorial I filmed to help you…
And here are some ideas for zines you could make…
List all of the things you’re looking forward to this spring.
Draw or list the flowers in bloom right now where you live.
Make your own Ostara Zine, or a zine about the Wheel of the Year.
Go out and draw some tree buds (can you ID them?).
Draw a different young spring leaf on each page or different leaf shapes you can find.
Make a note of all the seeds you’d like to grow this season and when you plan to sow them.
Write creative descriptions of the bird sounds you hear this weekend. Use Merlin to help you ID them if you like.
Colour each page with a different shade of green that you’ve found in nature.
Answer the journal prompts in this post.
Have fun and try not to be too precious about what you put inside. You can include drawings, writing or both. You could stick things in, paint the pages, cut shapes out of the pages… the options are endless! The beauty of a zine is that it can be really rough and ready and you don’t need any special materials to make one - a pencil and a sheet of paper will do just fine.
If you try this, let me know in the comments or message me a photo/video of your zine - I’d love to see them.
If you’re in the Southern Hemisphere - today you can celebrate Autumn Equinox, or Mabon!

What a super idea - love it
