Help the environment in just 15 minutes
The butterflies (and the wider environment) need YOU - for 15 minutes
Butterfly Conservation’s Big Butterfly Count 2025 starts TODAY and it’s easy to take part. All you have to do is sit in the same spot for 15 minutes and record the butterfly and moth species you see, then add your counts to the Butterfly Conservation website or app. Find out more and download resources to help you here.
The campaign runs between now and 10th August, so you have lots of time to take part, but I suggest doing it before you forget! Wild South London will be doing our own butterfly count on Sunday 27th July, at our Wild Walk on Clapham Common - join in with us if you like.
Following the results of the Big Butterfly Count 2024, Butterfly Conservation have declared a butterfly emergency and they need your help more than ever before! An average of just seven butterflies per count were recorded by participants in last year’s survey - this is the lowest in the Big Butterfly Count’s 14-year history. On top of this, a third of the species recorded in the 2024 count had their worst year on record and no species had their best year. That’s awful!
Dr Richard Fox, Head of Science at Butterfly Conservation, said:
“Butterflies are a key indicator species; when they are in trouble we know that the wider environment is in trouble too. Nature is sounding the alarm call. We must act now if we are to turn the tide on these rapid declines and protect species for future generations."
By taking part in Butterfly Conservation's Big Butterfly Count, which is a UK-wide survey, you can help assess the health of our environment simply by counting butterflies. Plus, sitting in a sunny spot for 15 minutes counting butterflies isn’t exactly taxing is it?! So do your bit and….
