What to expect from the Nature Notice Board Newsletter
Each week I’ll be sharing a simple prompt - something for you to notice in nature. If you can get out and find it, that’s great! If you can’t, maybe you could do some further research online, look it up on YouTube or find a book related to the thing I am sharing instead. Perhaps you’d like to draw a picture of it, or use it as a journal prompt or as inspiration for a poem.
The thing I’m inviting you to notice in nature may even lead you to notice other things… A chain reaction of nature joy!
Alongside these shorter emails I’ll be sending the occasional longer article about my own experiences in nature, plus a few other features…
I am studying a diploma in foraging and I would love to help you discover the wild food on your doorstep too, so occasionally I’ll be sharing foraging tasks, prompts, tips and recipes. Once you start taking notice, it’s amazing how much you’ll discover is edible or useful in some way.
I’m still learning, so it’s very possible you’ll be able to share some tips with me too!
One of my favourite ways to connect with nature (and to remember facts or identifying features) is to draw it and write about it. With this in mind, I’ll be sharing a creative task or journal prompt every month or so, to help you connect with nature on a deeper level.
There are some wonderful people out there doing important work to protect our planet and the things that live on it. I’ll be shining a spotlight on some good news to bring some balance to your news consumption, honour those who are finding ways to help and maybe inspire you to do your bit too.
Once in a while I’ll also send you ways you can help, whether that be signing an important petition, joining a protest, emailing your MP, or making a bird feeder!
I’d love to share some guest posts from other people who are interested in the natural world, so please get in touch if you’d like to share something with the community. Maybe you want to share your own experience of connecting with a particular thing or you’d like to share an article about your favourite place to walk and all the things you find there. Perhaps you are working in the field of nature and conservation and want to share your expertise with my readers. If so, please email me so we can chat about your idea.
Please note
I’m based in Kent, in the south east of the UK and I will mostly be using my experiences of living here and in south London (where I spent the first 31 years of my life) as a touchpoint to introduce you to things. Depending on where you live, you may not be able to seek out everything I prompt you to, or things may look slightly different. Some plants may appear or bloom later or earlier for example. Use what I send you as inspiration, rather than something you have to follow verbatim.
I am not a botanist, ornithologist or any other kind of ist. I am simply a nature enthusiast, learning along with you, rather than a nature expert who knows everything. I hope that we can all learn from each other in this space, so please do leave comments or email me to let me know what you’re noticing in nature (or if I’ve got something wrong).
Why not introduce yourself in the comments? I’d love to know where you’re based and what you’ve been noticing in nature lately.
See you in your inbox soon! You can find me on Instagram in the meantime. Right now I’m working my way through drawings, paintings and collages of the 100 birds I saw in 2022.
